How do Horned Lizards shoot blood from their eyes?
These creatures are special, There are 17 species of horned lizards that live in dry, desert areas from Guatemala and Mexico up though the western United States and even into Southern Canada.
They have a lot of predators which include bobcats, wolves, coyotes, foxes, snakes and hawks. They have developed some unique defense mechanisms. Their first defense is camouflage. Although the various species not the same in coloring and the right number and the placement of horns, They blend in really good with their dessert, normally when predators approach, they try to stay as still as possible.
If they are detected. They may or may not try to run away. They have wide, flat bodies with legs, so they are not really that fast. Many predators can outrun and hunt the horned lizard. Horned lizards will stretch out and puff themselves up to appear as large as possible.
As a last self defense, horned lizards may use a defensive method that’s normally effective against predators like bobcats, wolves, and coyotes. They shoot blood from their eye sockets. This usually frightens predators enough to make them flee. Fortunately for humans, horned lizards rarely shoot blood at people.
